Dr. Paul Mulzer
Excutive Producer
The FNI was started by psychiatrist Dr. Paul Mulzer when he noticed a severe lack of culturally appropriate video resources for use with First Nations clients. Dr. Mulzer served in the Canadian Air Force as a Captain, Flight Surgeon and crash investigator from 1985-1992. He then opened a private, general practice from 1992-2000. After much soul searching, he returned to residency to retrain in psychiatry from 2000-2004. He has been employed by St. Joseph's Care Group in Thunder Bay currently in the field of addictions and mental health as medical director of outreach services.
First Nation Initiative began as a collaboration of health care providers, the majority aboriginal, to explore the development of educational resources for aboriginal people. Our mandate was to create the highest production quality films exploring major mental health themes in First Nation communities and to accomplish this in a manner that was respectful and inclusive of the many, varied traditions. We have sought to enhance healing through candid explorations of the factors which have contributed to our current crisis in aboriginal health as well as practical tools to facilitate de-stigmatization and promote understanding and personal growth.
